Saving Face (2004)
Filial piety
"Gestures toward home and family seem both necessary and impossible: necessary for a sense of completion, impossible because family requires heteronormativity... In coming out, we risk.. losing this support, though the ever-growing organizations of lesbian and gay Asians have worked against this process of cultural exile", (Sohn18)

Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
-
Is this representation?
The only people being represented in this movie are rich, high-class, old-money, Chinese Americans
Racism
The only South Asians represented in this movie are guard in turbans, looking villainous and scary, and the servants of the Young household
This is even more concerning due to the history of South Asian migration and people in Singapore. There is heavy racism and discrimination in Singapore still happening today, and representation like this movie only perpetuates the idea that South Asians are not equal in Singapore. The fact that a movie this recent is representing South Asians in this light is pretty crazy, and very discriminatory and ignorant.
In addition, since there is Asian American representation, you would have thought that South Asians and other minority Asians in Singapore would have been represented better within the film.
There are four main languages in Singapore: English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil, and this was not represented well

Filial piety

Every decision is at first made based on societal expectations rather than the person's own wellbeing and life
Honor in Asian families: Eleanor's family is seen as less than because of her mother being a single mother and her father not being in the picture
"MULTICULTURAL REDEMPTION: CRAZY RICH ASIANS AND THE POLITICS OF REPRESENTATION," SUGINO
Belief that only way to liberate oneself from anti-Asian racism is to "climb the ranks of hierarchy"
Neoliberal democracy --> idea that fullness of citizenship and its privileges will come through economic & class mobility, meritocracy, global consumptive power
-
"assimilation to the values of whiteness as a form of redress for past exclusion" -- the Asians in this film take advantage of their power and do not use it for good, but for their own personal gain
"capitalist ascendency [is] an antidote to racial violence;" remarkable displays of success & economic vertical climbing are thought to insulate Asian Americans from racism; liberation from racism involves moving into positions of domination

My Geisha (1962)
White superiority
-
When Bob wanted to marry Yoko, Paul says that they are too different and the marriage will never work. He tried to come across as their ways of living and values do not align.
(1:02:05) - In the communal bath scene, Paul and Bob were excited to join the Japanese woman in the bath.
Even after that, both men still praise Lucy instead of others
Paul ends up with the film and Lucy, no consequences
-
Yellowface
Lucy dresses in yellowface by changing her hair, eyelids, makeup, and clothing to pretend to be a geisha and get the role
makeup artist Frank Westmore used clay casts to "model her Caucasian eye shape into an Oriental shape..pulled back with rubber bands to give the eye a more slanted appearance. Brown contact lenses and a heavy black wig were used..."

The Cheat (1915)
-
Gender
At first, Arakau seems to be attractive to Edith. However, Arakau's acions feeds into the stereotype of Asian men being aggressive or dominant. It gives the impression that there will always be a "hidden" side towards Asian men and that they cannot be trusted.
-
Who exactly is "The Cheat"? Edith is "cheating" on her husband, and both Edith and Arakau are "cheating" on their deal for the exchange of money. "The Cheat" implies something negative, but Edith walks away at the end with her husband and money.

Similar to Saving Face, Evelyn continues to be in denial that her daughter has a girlfriend. The blatant refusal to acknowledge this part of her daughter causes Joy to be hurt and always feel like a disappointment to her mother.
Tradition vs personal identity - Joy struggles to pick between the two in the beginning of the movie
-
Evelyn recognizes her past and how she has perpetuated her previous frustration of disappointment from her father, and is able to make up with Joy at the end.
