IO- CIRCE FROM WORLD'S WIFE AND KAL'S CARTOON OCTOBER 4TH 2018
INTRODUCTION
i’ll explore the global issue of power
The first text is the poem Circe by Carol Ann Duffy, a free verse about the greek goddess ‘circe’ from the collection of poems- World’s Wife.
The poem is about the enchantress reasserting control over her life and the depiction of men.
The second text, is a cartoon by Kevin Kallaugher, an American cartoonist who has published more than 8,000 cartoons about issues in our pre-existing society.
The selected piece, was published in The Economist, on October 4th 2018. The text covers the theme of the pivotal movement ‘me too’ and the power play involved in the faction.
The hierarchies of power have existed since the creation of Greek Mythologies, consequently with power comes justice, however we still witness prejudice amidst different genders in the 21st century.
In this oral, I’ll be exploring the question, how do the two texts present the idea of power hierarchies as a consequence of gender roles switching in society?
but more specifically the idea of power hierarchies as a consequence of gender roles switching in society.
To do this I’ll be looking at two different texts which examine this issue.
CIRCE- TONE AND SYMBOLISM
defined through her interaction with Odysseus, narrating her own journey, marring many beliefs about the powerful men in Greek mythology.
The narrator of the satirical tale of revenge is she, who possesses the ability to transform men into animals, Circe.
Duffy’s scathing retelling of the story is depicted through irony and humour, of a femme fatale who lures unwitting men to their doom.
This poem, contrary to myths, shows things from a woman’s perspective, and meant to be perceived by women.
‘I’m fond, nereids and nymphs, unlike some, of the pig, of the tusker, the snout, thee boar and the swine.’
The collected mannerism presented can be to depict the agonising anger within every woman towards men, that Circe unapologetically discusses.
he subtle power shift is established in the first few lines ‘One way or another, all pigs have been mine-‘
depicting the “ownership” of pigs, juxtaposing the objectification and power of owning women under the well exploited constructs of society.
powerful symbolism of using pigs or men as ingredients with violent and gruesome details, have subtle links to sexually exaggerative means. ‘Remember the skills of the tongue- to lock, to lap, to loosen, lubricate, to lie in the soft pouch of the face’
all relate back to the normalised nature of sexualising girls/ women/ goddesses.
The satirical tone established provides an impression of the mockery of hierarchy that includes policies created by men, power given to men and justice SOLELY for men. Much like how Odysseus is seen as brave for stopping Circe's act of defense
however Odysseus changes Circe's stance, impregnates her and leaves her with a child after a year to explore the world.

By letting Circe finally speak for herself the poem illuminates the way women’s experiences have been long misinterpreted or erased from stories told about them, presenting the paramount need of voicing victims in society by empowering gender role reversals.
CARTOON- TONE AND SYMBOLISM
the cartoon by Kal Kalahar uses the ‘me too’ movement to depict the underlying distortions within the “equal” hierarchies.
The 2018 movement, has been criticised heavily for the distortion of information, defamation and unprecedented claims.
The cartoon acts as a satire towards men in the me too movement, directly related to how the constant victimisation and manipulation of power was presented.
Opposing the ideas of Circe the text provides voice to men or patriarchy, to depict the reality of system Carol Ann Duffy wished to challenge.
The irony remains in the juxtaposing art and text, on one side of the scale of justice sits a huge potent man, with wealth, representing the patriarchy, while a small pile of stones being pelted by women with great efforts using machinery lie on the other side of the scale.
The cartoon brings the privilege and hierarchy of men being tested through the various mass allegation of injustices. Patriarchy says “MEN TODAY ARE UNDER SIEGE!!!” whilst dragging down the justice scale with its power.
The irony is in the symbolism of the justice scale, where all deeds are weighed equally.
However, the cartoon shows the unequal distribution of resources, power and opportunities for women as part of society.
The global issue of politics, power and justice is represented through the patriarchal hierarchy of power, that is shown to be the political decision maker to mark the voice of justice
ironically the voice of justice is for the man sitting with lavish resources.
The symbolism of the distorted system is presented in a satirical and comical aspect, due to the actual state of the paradigm we call society,
