- - - - Effects? = Repeated activation strengthens connection, increased efficiency of neural transmission.
      - Rules in Learning/Memory? = Decreases likelihood of forgetfulness, strengthens importanted/wanted/useful memories, developing a "memory trace"
      - Structural Changes? = Increased no. of receptor sites, bushier dendrites on postsynaptic neuron, due to sprouting.
    - - Effects? = Long-lasting weakening of neural connections, decreased efficiency of neural/synaptic transmission.
      - Structural Changes? = Decreased no. of receptor sites/dendrites on postsynaptic neuron, due to pruning.
      - Roles in Learning/Memory? = Weakens a 'memory trace,' from unused synapses that are pruned to only retain important memories

PARTS OF A NEURON (ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE)

Dendrites = Receives synaptic inputs from the postsynaptic neuron

Cell Body (Soma) = Contains genetic information with a nucleus, maintains the neurons’ structure and provides energy for the neuron’s activities.

Axon = Joins the cell body at a specialized junction, carrying electrical impulses form the dendrites along to other cells.

Myelin Sheath = Insulates the axon with a fatty substance, helping the axon to conduct electrical impulses quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells. If the myelin is damaged, then the transmission of these impulses slows down.

Axon terminals = Transmits signals towards other neurons

- - - - RAPID EYE MOVEMENT (REM) = A type of sleep, characterised by rapid eye movement, high levels of brain activity and low levels of physical activity. This is where most dreaming occurs, as when a person wakes up during this stage, they are able to remember their dreams vividly.
        The Amount of time spent in REM Sleep increases through each sleep cycle of a sleep episode (Covers 20% of the sleep episode from childhood)
      - NON-RAPID MOVEMENT (NREM) = A type of sleep, characterised by a progressive decline in physiological activity. (Covers 80% of the sleep episode from childhood)
        
        NREM Stage 1 = Transition between wakefulness to light sleep, where people experience the feelings of floating, flying as they lose awareness of themselves and their surroundings.
        
        NREM Stage 2 = Decrease in body temperature and heart rate, producing sleep spindles
        
        NREM Stage 3 = Deepest sleep occurs. Muscles Relax, blood pressure/breathing rates decrease + Difficult to wake up the sleeper if they are woken up in this stage, feeling drowsy and disoriented.
      - Sleep Episodes = An entire amount of time a person spends asleep, make up of sleep cycles
      - Sleep Cycle = A proportion of a sleep episode, progressing through the stage sof REm and NREM, lasting 90 minutes on average.
    - - Normal Waking consciousness = State of being awake/aware of internal/external stimuli
      - Altered State of Consciousness = Different levels of awareness
        
        Naturally Occuring Altered States of Consciousness = Occurs without intervention, happen normally
        
        Induced Altered States of Consciousness = Occurs with purposeful action
