Unit 2 Properties of Matter - Coggle Diagram
Unit 2 Properties of Matter
2.1
Physical Properties describe a substance
Physical properties
Color, Shape, Size, Texture, Volume.
Density
Density = Mass/ Volume
Physical changes
Stretching a rubber band, it will still come back to a rubber band
Chemical properties describe how substances form new substances
Signs of a chemical change
Production of an Odor
rotting produces the smell of sulfur
Change in Temperature
Logs burning is higher of heat
Change in Color
fruit can change color when it ripens
Formation of Bubbles
When a antacid tablet makes contact with water, it starts to bubble
Formation of a Solid
When two liquids are combined, they could turn solid
Chemical Properties and Changes
Chemical properties describe how substances can form new substances like iron can rust
2.2
Solids can become liquids, and liquids can become solids
Melting
Melting point is the point it melts
Freezing
freezing point is the point it freezes
Matter can change form one state to another
Solid, Liquid, Gas
Liquids can become gases, and gases can become liquids
Evaporation
The energy in liquid increases so that the liquid evaporates
Boiling
Condensation
2.3
Substances have characteristic properties
Identifying Unknown Substances
You use density and color and freezing point...etc to know what the unknown substance is
Properties used for Identifying Substances
Denstiy
Density lets us figure out how hard it is, but if 2 things have the same density, we need other data
Heating Properties
Substances that heat up fast and slow
Solubility
how much of a thing dissolves in a given amount of liquid
Electric Properties
Some substances can move energy through them fast and slow or not at all!
Magnetic Properties
Some substances are magnetic
Mixtures can be separated by using the properties of the substances in them
If you drop a pile of magnets in some wood chips, you can use a magnet to take the magnets out.
