- - - - He revived the Hippocratic tradition by teaching students at the patient's bedside. This was done as a regular part of the university course for the medical students who studied at Leyden which is situated in the Netherlands.
      - The clinical method is therefore a combination of practice with theory. This method was introduced into medical education when Boerhaave founded a hospital and gave clinical instructions to his pupils.
      - The clinical method: Towards the end of the eighteenth century in Europe, there was a major change in the provision and organisation of healthcare, and this was because of Herman Boerhaave.
      - Institutionalisation of healthcare: Before 19th century healthcare took place in people's homes. This was performed by household members or non-professionals. There was a move away from healthcare in homes during the 1800s. Healthcare moved from homes to institutions called hospitals. Hospitals could only provide 'primitive' treatment. There were very poor conditions as there was overcrowding, poor ventilation and the standards of sanitation and hygiene were non-existent. Hospitals were seen as a place for the lower class.
      - There was a development of the germ theory which was the main factor that changed the negative image of the hospitals. This theory affected hygiene standards. It also led to the realisation that patients should be isolated to prevent the spread of infection to others who were suffering from different conditions. Hospitals became safer because of isolation. There was now a new image of hospitals, and they were seen as institutions for patients of all social classes. They could expect the highest quality of medical care and could expect to be cured.
