Grit Book
- What chapter in this book did you relate to the most?
-
liked ch 3 for defining gifted and reframing the p.o.v. of working with gifted students.
also relating the process to sports and how every football team has pretty much same goal of win state champs
like it because can relay that to students and how sports are similar here
- How can you improve the feedback you give your students in order to challenge and hold them accountable? (Chapter 3)
In that case, use affective questions (questions about feelings) to talk about the work rather than just the product:
-

-
-
-
reframe as experience and fail forward and failure as data. remind them of expectations and that I am here for them and they can do this
- Who was your favorite teacher? Why? Least favorite? Why?
Hatesh --> set serious standard and challenging expectation and then would jump to the rescue if you were struggling. stayed late to help. really knew his subject. first one I remember who would call on people randomly. make mistakes on purpose to see who was paying attention.
least not sure maybe ones that were disinterested in helping like some from bing it seemed like they were more geared towards research
- What in this book prompted the strongest emotional reaction to you?
the challenge of reward maybe. Like the frustrating part of you can try really hard to set things up but then students still won't be interested
- Did the suggestions in this book seem practical? What is the one thing you are going to try to do immediately to move closer to a better vision for learning?
I like the idea of prompting students to set a goal for their learning. also the passion project.
getting students to self reflect on when their mind wanders. like trying to note where/when that happens and maybe why
- Think about growth and a fixed mindset. Describe students you have that fit into each category and discuss how you approach and motivate each type of student. Give an example of 2 students. (Chapter 4)

- Passion can be built in an environment focused on competence, respect, autonomy, creativity, and a sense of impact. Of these, which do you do well and where /how can you improve? (Chapter 5)
- Think of students who are being raised with a variety of parenting styles (authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative). How do you communicate/discipline/teach differently in response to this?(Chapt. 6)
