Insects
Natural Science
Discussing how the caterpillar grows into a Butterfly
A caterpillar goes through 4 phases of metaphorphsis, starting as an egg before hatching into a caterpillar then eating until it grows to up to 100x its original size and morphing into a pupa otherwise known as a cocoon and then finally hatching from that cocoon into a butterfly.(Allan's Pet Center, 2020)
Activity: Children can start by drawing a caterpillar's face on paper, then creating the body by dipping their thumb in paint and counting along as they press their thumbs on the paper to make the caterpillar's body.(Ellis, 2022)
Different types of insects
There are over 900000 identified insect species in the world.(Gaeng, 2023)
Activity: Children can go outside and write down the names of all the different insects they can find in the play ground then organise them by how many legs they had
Why Bees are important to the environment
Activity: Children can make their own Bee's by using toilet paper rolls, small pom poms, paper, and colouring pencils
Bee's are important for the growth of most plants and crops.(Millar, 2021)
Technology
The structure of an ant hill
Activity: I will have the class draw their own ant hills on paper and crayons then stick down various cut-up pieces of straws that will act as the tunnels.
The Ant hill is about 2 meters long from the mound and has dozens of smaller tunnels inside it.(Insider Science, 2019)
Talking about the structure of a Bee hive and how it is made
Bee hives are made from beeswax a substance excreted from worker bees and are hexagonal to create a sturdier frame for the hive and to store honey.(George, 2017)
Activity: I will bring to class a picture of a sad Bee and together with he class we will think, design and make a Bee Hive using recycled materials for him to live in.
Social Science
Why we must be cautious around insects.
Activity: I will split the class into 2 teams, one are insects and the other humans. I will have give each of the bugs a different named bug then have the humans go to which bug they think is safe and high five them.
Insects may look cool to some and be helpful to the environment we must still be cause around them as fleas, ticks, spiders, bees, and wasps all can bite.(VahnDijk, 2020)
How long insects have been around for?
Activity: I will bring to class mini plastic bugs then using brown playdough have the children press the mini bugs onto it to create "fossils"
Insects have been around for more than 400 million years as studies from fossils have shown us. (Dunning, 2014)
