Types of Assessment
Diagnostic Assessment
Diagnostic assessments are sets of written questions (multiple choice or short answer) that assess a learner's current knowledge base or current views on a topic/issue to be studied in the course. (Vincent)
A diagnostic assessment can be the use of tools i.e. tests or quizzes to help the teacher understand what level a student is at prior to beginning a class or unit.

Formative and Summative Assessments
(Vincent)
The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning (Vincent)

Summative assessment takes place after the learning has been completed and provides information and feedback that sums up the teaching and learning process. Typically, no more formal learning is taking place at this stage, other than incidental learning which might take place through the completion of projects and assignments. (Vincent)
