What is
Abnormal?
- how do we differentiate between cultural differences and clinical abnormalities? when does someone cross the line from being eccentric to psychosomatic?
- looking at how we define, assess, research, and treat psychopathology.
- the term psychopathology comes from the Greek works "psycho" (soul), and "pathos" (suffering). "ology" comes from the word "logos" (to study).
- abnormal is an abstract construct. no straightforward answer and no single definition.
- general consensus is that "abnormal" is something undesirable, and some change is needed.

- the dsm-5 (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders- 5th edition) stipulates that psychological disorders involve as significant difficulty in thinking, feeling, or behaving.
- seen as maladaptive, and are usually distressing to the individual or those around them.
- symptoms often impair a person's social or occupational functioning, and while the symptoms often violate social norms, they aren't solely due to social deviance of cultural differences.
