Religious values of peace with Islam
Mohammad: believed to be chosen by God as a prophet due to him being fair and wise, with concern for the people.
Gabriel: An angel of God sent between Heaven and the human realm, a bearer of news to prophets.
Quran: " the holy book of Islam. For Muslims there is nothing holier on earth." (Pg.256, Novak).
Hadith: "traditions of Muhammad" (Pg.256, Novak).
Tawheed: The belief in only their one God.
Shirk: To compare any other God or worship others compared to their on god, "asking where electricity comes from—is in principle to commit shirk; for because only God is self-sufficient, to consider other things as such is to liken them to God and thereby ascribe to him rivals." (Pg.236, Smith).
Jihad: "Muhammad states that the lesser jihad is the struggle with an external enemy, while the true or greater jihad is the struggle with oneself." (Pg.272, Novak).
People of the book: "This entitles Jews and Christians to be included with Muslims as “People of the Book.” (Because the context of the koranic revelation is the Middle East, religions of other lands are not mentioned, but their existence is implied and in principle validated"(Pg.210-211, Smith).
Theocracy: states officially ruled by Islamic laws, an Islamic republic.
Sharia: meaning a correct path, following the divine counsel and living moral lives to get closer to God.
Abu Bakr: A close companion and advisor to Mohammad.
Mecca: The holiest Muslim city
Medina: " al-Nabi, the City of the Prophet, and then by contraction simply to Medina, “the city.”"(Pg.207, Smith).
Al – Kitab: A term referring to individuals who follow Islam.
Five Pillars: Profession of Faith (shahada), Prayer (salat), Alms (zakat), Fasting (sawm), Pilgrimage (hajj)
Shahadah: profession of faith. There is no other God but God and Mohammad is the true prophet.
Salat: Daily prayer. Ritual prayer all Muslims perform.
Zakat: offering, an individual has an obligation to donate a certain amount of money each year for charity.
Sawm: fasting. During the month of Ramadan all individuals past puberty must participate.
Hajj: pilgrimage to Mecca. Every Muslim must make a trip to Mecca at least once in their life as the fifth pillar of Islam.
Sunni: The largest branch of Islam, 87-90%
Sh'ia: The second largest branch of Islam, followed by 10-15% of individuals.
Sufism: The Islamic Mysticism, a belief that is practiced to help Muslims be closer to Allah through personal experience.
