SUB TOPIC 2: Different types of insects
CONCEPT 1: The difference between grasshoppers and crickets- one of the most noticeable differences is that crickets have much larger antennae. Grasshoppers use their legs to make noise and jump. While crickets use their wings to chirp. (Zeidan, 2023)
CLASS ACTIVITY: Classification of insects. Being able to tell the difference between a grasshopper and cricket, and a butterfly and moth.
CONCEPT 2: The difference between butterflies and moths- Butterflies are usually larger and will have more colourful wings with patterns. Whereas moths are typically smaller with dull coloured wings. (Science Reference Section, 2019)
SUB TOPIC 1: Characteristics of an insect
CLASS ACTIVITY: Worksheet- Labelling of an insect.
CONCEPT 3: Appearance and Habitat- Most insects are small in size. Less than 6mm long. However, there are certain insects that can be as large as 27cm such as the Goliath beetle. (Wigglesworth, 2023)
CONCEPT 1: What is an insect-
Insects are creatures that have bodies that are made up of 3 segments. It is protected by a hard shell which is called an Exo- skeleton. (The Schoolrun.com, 2023)
CONCEPT 2: General features- Segments of an insect are: the head, thorax, and abdomen. Most insects have 2 pairs of wings attached to their thorax. When they are not flying they will hide their wings under a hard shell to protect themselves. (The Schoolrun.com, 2023)
SUB TOPIC 3: Life cycle of an insect
CONCEPT 1: What is a life cycle- A life cycle is made up of developmental stages that all living organisms have to go through in order to mature in life. In most insects, the transition is as follows- Egg, larva, pupa, and imago (adult). (Kiddle Encyclopedia, 2023)
CONCEPT 2: What is a caterpillar- A caterpillar is a young butterfly that has just hatched from its egg. It is therefore a Larva. When the caterpillar matures it will turn into a Pupa and then finally a butterfly. (Kiddle Encyclopedia, 2023)
CLASS ACTIVITY: Label the life cycle of a butterfly

SUB TOPIC 1: How insects help us
CONCEPT 1: Role in nature- Insects play many vital roles in nature such as helping bacteria, fungi, and other organisms in the decomposition of organic matter and the formation of soil. (Wigglesworth, 2023)
CONCEPT 2: Commercial Significance- Specific insects provide us with commercial products like wax and honey to name a few. Which are greatly beneficial to humans. (Wigglesworth, 2023)
CLASS ACTIVITY: Draw a mind map of how insects help humans.
SUB TOPIC 2: How some insects harms us
CONCEPT 1: Harmful insects to humans- Bed bugs and mosquitoes bite humans and suck our blood. This can result in diseases being carried and passed like Malaria. (Orchards International School, 2023)
CONCEPT 2: Insect damage to commercial products- Termites and carpenter ants feed on wooden products. Silverfish and moths feed on silk and woolen clothes. (Orchards International School, 2023)
CLASS ACTIVITY: Write a short paragraph on how we as humans can control insect damage to commercial products.
SUB TOPIC 3: Different types of insects
CONCEPT 1: Insect Habitat- Insects have adapted to live in all types of habitats such as land, water, mountains, and deserts. Some insects even change their habitat based on their current life cycle stage. (Orchards International School, 2023
CONCEPT 2: Where different types of insects come from. 1. Terrestrial Habitat- build mound on land. Examples: ants and termites. 2. Aquatic Habitat- Some insects live in water during the early stages of their life. Examples: Mosquitoes and Dragonflies. 3. Hives- Some insects live in small groups known as colonies. The structure they build and live in is known as a Hive. Examples: Bees and wasps. (Orchards International School, 2023
CLASS ACTIVITY: Match the insect to its correct Habitat.

SUB TOPIC 1: How insects help us and why
CLASS ACTIVITY: Problem to solve-Our school does not have helpful insects in the school garden. Solve this by designing and formulating a solution to attract honeybees to the school garden.
CONCEPT 2: Ways to attract helpful insects- 1. Grow insect-friendly plants. 2. Create a log pile. 3. Create a compost heap. (Mchale,2021)
CONCEPT 1: Which insects are helpful to us and why:- Dung beetles fertilize the soil with dung balls. Honey and wax from bees. Honeybees, moths, and butterflies visit different flowers to aid in pollination. (Mchale,2021)
SUB TOPIC 2: Harmful insects
CONCEPT 1: What insects are harmful- 1. Tree borer and beetles. 2. Wasps and Hornets.3. Locusts. (Orchards International School, 2023)
CONCEPT 2: Why are these insects harmful- 1. Damage tree trunks by digging into them. 2. Feed on useful insects such as bees. 3. Cause damage to agricultural farms. (Orchards International School, 2023)
CLASS ACTIVITY: Problem to solve- Insects are harming the plants in your garden. Research ideas on how to solve this problem by using natural repellents. Make a natural repellent, design a bottle for it and include the recipe that you used. And explain why you chose to use that natural repellent.
