Identity: What does it mean to be Australian?
Share Our Pride
The lives of Indigenous Australians today are affected by what has happened to us and our ancestors over the past 230 years since Europeans arrived. - Professor Mick Dodson
To be Australian is to acknowledge the shared history of Aboriginal mistreatment, and make amends. To be Australian also means to prevent history from repeating itself to safeguard the rights of Indigenous people.
3 June: The Mabo decision
On 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia decided that terra nullius should not have been applied to Australia.
To be Australian is to respect the rights of Aboriginal Australians to their land as stated by Australian law. To be Australian also means to honor the sacrfice of Aboriginal activists such as Eddie Mabo who fought for this High Court decision, but died 5 months before.
Share Our Pride
Sharing our history means honouring Australians who have stood up for Aboriginal rights over the years.- Linda Burney
Linda Burney is an Aboriginal woman who is the Shadow Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. As such, to be Australian is to share Aboriginal history with Aboriginal Australians so the courage of Aboriginal rights activists can be honoured and be modeled by the next generation of Aussies.
