Definitions
Respiration
A chemical process whereby digested food is broken down in the presence of oxygen to release energy to be used by cells for supporting life processes
-
-
Breathing
A physical process whereby air is taken into the body (inhalation) and air is removed from the body (exhalation)
-
Process
Inhalation
- Ribcage moves upwards and outwards
- Diaphragm contracts and moves downwards
- Size of chest cavity increases
- Air from the surroundings enter the lungs through the nose
Exhalation
-
- Diaphragm relates and moves upwards
- Size of chest cavity decreases
- Air in the lungs is forced out of the lungs through the nose
-
Gaseous exhange
A physical process whereby oxygen is absorbed into the blood and carbon dioxide is removed from the blood
-
Circulatory systems
Function: to transport blood containing important substances like digested food, oxygen and water to all parts of the body, and to remove waste materials like carbon dioxide from the body cells
consists of heart, blood vessels and blood
-
The circulatory system works with other body systems to transport substances to and from other systems, such as the respiratory and digestive systems, to release energy through respiration
