What is it? (Book page 22)
The goal of palliative care is to improve the quallity of life of pt and families who are experiencing problems related to life-threatening illnesses
What does it focus on? (Book page 22)
On early identification and treatment of:
Physical, psychosocial, and spiritual problems
Relief of pain and suffering
Continuity of care
Helping pt and families make infromed decisions
What palliative care is NOT (Book page 751)
A misconception of palliative care is that it is used ONLY when curative treatments are no longer persude
The World Health Organization's palliative care philosophy (Book page 751)
Provides relief pain and other distressing symptoms.
Affirms life and regards dying as a normal process.
Intends neither to hasten or pospone death.
Integrates the psychological and spiritual of pt care.
Offers a suport system to help pt live as actively as possible until death.
Offers a support system to help the family cope during the pt illness and in their own bereavement.
Uses a team aproach to address the needs of pt and their families, including bereavement counseling, if indicated.
Will enhanc the quality of life and may also influence the course of illness.
