How could you determine the acidity of household items?
What is acidity?
Acidity is the measure of the strength of an acid in a solution
The amount of acid in a solution can be determined in many ways
Acidity
Acidity a substance's tendency to donate H+ ions, or protons
Acids react with bases and form H20 and a salt
How can you measure acidity?
Titrations can help to find the concentration of an acid in a solution. This is an accurate way of obtaining acidity, but takes lots of time and calculations
PH indicator can indicate a rough level of acidity of a substance
Electric PH meters can indicate acidity but are not readily available and can have faults
Household acid
Lemon juice
:red_cross: Is slightly opaque and already has a colour.
:check: Is easily accessible and cheap
Vinegar
There are different brands eg of vinegar
is translucent so colour change for titration/indicator would be easier
Wine
Has colour so not good for titration or indicator
More expensive
Independent variable
Types of vinegars
Alters the acid content, but are all types of vinegar clear?
White vinegar is clear
Rice vinegar can be clear
distilled vinegar is also clear
Brands of white vinegar
Acid contents may vary
No scientific background to discuss / consider for hypothesis
Maybe socio/humanities background - ,more expensive vinegar has higher acid content?
Temperature
Temperature does impact PH readings, and must be controlled if it is not independent variable. Temperature increases acid ionization and alters PH readings, however it does not increase actual acidity.
