Carboniferous period
Plants use sunlight and CO2 and release O2, some part of the CO2 is stored in the plants. As coal is formed from the same, when burned, it releases energy and CO2. The carbon stored in plants is the carbon composition in coal.
When plants and trees were compresses and decomposed by microbial activity and under great pressure and temperature, coal was formed after a long period of time
