Ways to become citizen
BY DECENT: a person must have one parent who is a citizen of that country
BY COUNTRY OF BIRTH: a small number of countries grant citizenship to those who are born within their borders.
BY MARRIAGE: In many countries, a person can become a citizen by marrying someone who is alreadt a citizen of that country.
Singapore: Citizens through marriage or naturalisation need to gain Permanent Resident (PR) status first
BY NATURALISATION: Many countries grant citizenship to a person who registers to become a citizen after having already lived there for a certain number of years.
take note: some countries require those who seek citizenship to pass a test and or give up their original citizenship

What is a democracy?
Democracy is a system in which people have the right to choose representatives who will in turn make up the government
Representative Democrasy
Citizens elect individuals to represent them in an assembly, usually called a parliament, which is given the power to make decisions on behalf of the counrty according to the countries's consititution, that is the laws of the country

Singapore has certain rights in the area of education when it comes to the financial aid provided by the government to educational institutions
Responsibilities of Citizens
Citizens have responsibilities or duties to do certain things for their country

Citizens of singapore have to follow the law and treat others from different ethnic groups fairly.
Citizens of singapore have a duty to contribute towards a common good of the country by joining efforts that help improve society
All these work to build a harmonious Singapore that advances the well-being of all Singaporeans
How can citizenship be shared?

A shared national identity can define citizenship
It comes from a shared sense of belonging towards the same country
Examples
Singaporeans take pride in our country being seen as a food haven that has all kinds of different food scattered across the country
Common experiences
Singing the national anthem and taking the national pledge during school years
Celebrating national holidays like national day together
