Koha
A formal koha is the giving of gifts or money by manuhiri to a host marae as part of a powhiri. Koha is also a common practice in Aotearoa in many formal ways. We often bring a koha of food or gifts when visiting friends and whanau. Very rarely would people arrive to visit without bringing something, however small. - Bella
Karanga
a karanga is a ceremonial call to welcome visitors onto the marae, a karanga is carried out by a woman and are initiated by the tangata whenua. You cannot enter the marae grounds until you hear this call. - charm
Hongi
the hongi celebrates life and well being, also the ha (breath of life) is exchanged in a symbolic show of unity, a hongi is the pressing of noses. - charm
Wero
Wero means 'challenge' it is performed by men who are trained warriors in Te whare tū taua (Māori martial arts of weaponry) The wero originally was performed to determine the intent of the manuhiri whether they came in peace or for war. Nowadays the wero is used to give honour to distinguished guests or dignatries.
