Evolution of Software Applications
Hardware and software were once intimately linked
Command lines interfaces are text based
The user enters commands or inputs to the system
CLI's remain popular when performing specialised/automated tasks
In these cases, the user has extensive expertise/knowledge of the available commands.
In the early 1970s, all applications used a CLI
The GUI concept was very much a theoretical possibility
A team of researches working at Xerox during the early 1970s refined many of the design concepts that form the basis of today's GUIs.
Their intention was not to create a commercial product, but rather to investigate and brainstorm ideas for new products.
They developed the experimental machine known as the 'Alto'
The Alto is recognised as the first computer to include a fully bit-mapped display, including drop down menus and icons.
In 1981, Xerox produced the 'Star' a commercially available machine using a GUI.
The Star was not a personal computer - rather, it was designed for business use - it was never to be a commercial success.
During the 1970s, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak produced the Apple I and in 1976 released the highly successful Apple II
The Apple II was the first widely used personal computer for the masses.
Apple computer soon became a huge multi-national business.
Apple payed Xerox in the form of shares. They then improved and modified the Xerox GUI concept.
