Generative Grammar

Chomsky's Theory of syntax

What is generative grammar? Linguists who work within the framework of generative grammar strive to develop a general theory that reveals the rules and laws that govern the structure of particular languages, and the general laws and principles governing all natural languages. The basic areas of study include phonology (the study of the sound patterns of language), morphology (the study of the structure and meaning of words), syntax (the study of the structure of sentences), and semantics (the study of linguistic meaning). ~Princeton.edu

The process of changing a deep structure into a surface structure is referred to as a transformation. Transformations can involve moving parts of the sentence or adding or deleting parts.

Cognates are words that come from the same root. Students use their knowledge of morphology to develop academic vocabulary through the study of cognates.

An internet tool can be used to build academic vocabulary for emergent bilinguals is WordShift. WordShift was created to help teachers manage the demands of vocabulary and academic language in their text materials.

The natural order hypothesis is the idea that children learning their first language acquire grammatical structures in a pre-determined, 'natural' order, and that some are acquired earlier than others. This idea has been extended to account for second language acquisition in Krashen's theory of language acquisition. ~Teachingenglish.org
