THERE'S, THERE ARE, A LOT OF, SOME, NO
We use
“there is”
for singular and uncountable nouns, and we use
“there are”
for plural countable nouns.
EXAMPLES
There are
five people in the office. (plural countable noun) /
There’s
milk in the fridge. (uncountable noun)
We use
"a lot of
" to express a large number or amount of something.
EXAMPLE
There are
a lot of
trees in this park.
We use “
some
” if we don’t know the exact quantity.
EXAMPLES
There are
some
people in the office / There’s
some
milk in the fridge.
We use
"no
" in affirmative sentences.
EXAMPLE
There are
no
biscuits left.
COUNT AND NON-COUNT NOUNS
Count nouns can be separated into individual units and counted. They usually have both a singular and a plural form.
EXAMPLES:
one phone, two phones
clothes
jeans
shorts
The plural is formed by adding -s (flower / flowers), or -es (bus / buses).
(Exceptions: irregular nouns. For example: child – children, foot – feet, tooth – teeth.
Noncount (or uncountable) nouns exist as masses or abstract quantities that cannot be counted.
EXAMPLES:
A mass: work, homework, money,...
A natural substance: air, ice, water,...
Food: milk, rice, coffee,...
An abstract concept: advice, education, time,...
A game: soccer, tennis, basketball,...
A disease: diabetes, polio, influenza,..
A subject of study: economics, astronomy, biology,...
A language: Chinese, Spanish, English,...
An activity (in the "-ing" form): swimming, dancing, reading,...
