VIRUSES
Examples
INFLUENZA VIRUS
- Causes Flu - Highly contagious respiratory illness
- Used to develop vaccines to protect against seasonal flu outbreaks
-
HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS
Causes AIDS - Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
It attacks the immune system, weakening the body's ability to fight infections and diseases.
SARS- CoV-2 (COVID 19 VIRUS)
-
POLIOVIRUS
Causes Polio- a disease that effect the nervous system, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis.
Highly dangerous and affects children under the age of 5.
BACTERIOPHAGE
A phage (meaning to eat or devour), this case a bacteriophage, is a bacteria-eater. It's main function is to infect bacterial cells, replicate inside them and eventually case them to burst open, releasing new viral particles.
These have potential therapeutic applications such as an alternative to antibiotics in treating bacterial infections. Phage Therapy involves specific phages to target harmful bacteria and eliminating them, without effecting the useful bacteria.
Acellular
Lack cellular structure- Organelles, enzymes that are required by any microorganisms to do various functions within the cell in order to survive.

Has a simple structure. Has genetic material (DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protective protein coat called a capsid. Below is the image of Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV)
Viruses are like INTRUDERS that need to invade a living cell to survive and multiply.
They must infect the host cell, hijack its cellular machinery to carry out their life cycle and reproduce.
