PROTISTS
Protozoa

Examples
Paramecium
Uses:
- Used as a research model to study cell structure, movement and behaviour in freshwater ecosystems
- It is an environmental indicator - Presence of paramecium indicates a healthy ecosystem.
Harmful Effect:
Does not have any direct harmful effects on humans of the environment.
It has numerous hair-like structures called CILIA that cover its entire body. The CILIA beat rhythmically, propelling the organism through the water, and also helps it capture food.
FUN FACT: Has two nuclei:
One nuclei (macronucleus) helps in regulating and controlling cell functions.
Second Nuclei (micronucleus) is involved in reproduction.
Trypanosoma
Has a long whip-like FLAGELLUM which enables it to execute movement in the host's bloodstream and tissues
-
Uses:
- Used in research to study parasitism and the mechanisms of diseases like African Sleeping Sickness (Tryponosoma brucei)
Harmful Effect:
- Trypanosoma brucei and Tryponosoma cruzi are parasites that cause human diseases such as African Sleeping Sickness and Chagas disease.
Amoeba
-
-
Uses:
- Used in biological research to study cell biology and phagocytes
Harmful Effects:
- Some amoeba like Naegleria fowleri are pathogenic. This amoeba is responsible for severe brain infection. It enters through the nasal passage.
