Offer Nonverbal Communication
-offer ways for students to work through things in the classroom without having to communicate with others
-Here are some examples of things which students can work on without having to communicate using words
-running learning stations
-- rotating around the classroom
-Obtaining needed supplies
-Leaving the classroom for necessities such as water break and bathroom use
Model Ideal Behavior
Use polite language
Maintain eye contact
Keep phones in your pockets
Let one another speak uninterrupted
Raise concerns about one another’s statements in a respectful manner
Meet with Students One on One
What helps them focus
Who they work well with
Their favorite types of lessons
Their favorite in-class activities
Which kinds of exercises help them remember key lesson points
Positive Letters or Phone Calls Home
-Celebrate times when students show success and work hard
-Let parents know has a trickle-down effect.
-This will create a positive relationship about school for families, students and teachers.
-This can also entice parents to grow more invested in a child’s learning, opening the door to at-home lessons.
Write Classroom Expectations as a Class
-Group contracts should be based on expectations that students have for each other, and you have for them.
-You can gather the class’s thoughts by holding a discussion about what the ideal group member does, and how he or she acts.
-Once you’ve written the contract, encourage students to come up with consequences for violating expectations.
-By having them sign a fresh version of the contract each year, students are accountable for their behavior
Offer Different Study Types to meet the needs of all of your students
Providing audiobooks, which can play material relevant to your lessons
Maintaining a designated quiet space for students to take notes and complete work
Creating a station for challenging group games that teach or reinforce standards-aligned skills
Allowing students to work in groups while taking notes and completing work, away from quiet zones
Let Students Establish Guidelines
-Ask students what they believe should and shouldn’t fly in terms of appropriate behavior.
-Ask students what they believe is considered to be appropriate behavior
-Ask students what they want their classroom to be like
Encourage Growth Mindset
-Promote Growth Mindset
-Promote working hard and trying your best
-Show students that it is OK to make mistakes
Offer Praise

Improve a student’s self-esteem
Reinforce rules and values you want to see
Build Excitement for Lessons
Build up excitement around a topic by telling students “this is something that the older kids are learning too” to make them feel “grown-up” and special.
Build up an exciting lesson which is happening later in the week
Celebrate student work during the lesson to allow student excitement to continue until the end of the lesson
