Technology Choices in the Classroom
Where to start? Choosing Great Technology :pencil2:
When using technology tools in the classroom, it doesn't always have to be the newest website. It is best to use something that the students are familiar with. Teachers want to make sure that the students are being taught the academics and not on how to use their computer.
Age appropriate?
We as teachers need to make sure that we are aware of what our students are using on their technology. Some times we may think that a specific tool is cool and that we have to use it, but if it is not age appropriate then it will be useless.
Accesible?
Does the tool that we are trying to use match all the requirements needed for all the students
Is the tool engaging?
When picking technology, it needs to be checked that the students are going to find it engaging and enjoyable to learn. We as adults may think that it is the coolest sight to use, but if the students do not like the interaction, then they are less likely to learn and be involved.
Where to start? Intergrating Technology in existing lessons
Don't Fix It, If its not broken.
As new teachers, we do not have to go out of our way to make the teachings for our students over the top. Teaching tactics have come a long way and if they are a beneifical, then there is no need to change it. Technology is a tool to help inhance the classroom. It is not put in place to replace something. It is a helpful tool for the students and the educator.
Will it benefit MY students?
In chapter 8, it highlights the word, "your students." This is to point out one thing. Is this tool going to benefit my current students? The tool may be used in previous classes or years and done wonderful, but for some reason it is not doing well with your current students. That is okay! Not everyone is going to be able to learn and adapt like others. DO NOT force something onto the students if they are not going to benefit from it in the long run.
Where to start?
Using Technology to Increase Educator Efficacy and Efficiency
Spend the Time!
If you are wanting to use a new tool in the classroom, it is crucial that you take the time to evaluate it. The first time that it is used should be in the classroom with the students. The students are going to be dependent on your knowledge of the tool to help them navigate through it.
Efficacy Through Technology
These are tools that teachers can use that will help benefit their classroom.
Pre-recorded lessons: this can help students who are needing the extra review over something in the past while the teacher is gone or during downtime.
Distance education: this is a tool with students if in person is not an option. This makes the students become more independent and responsible for their work while away.
What technology is used?
it is important to become familiar with the tools that have already been shown to the students. It is not frowned upon to add new tools to the mix, but it makes it much easier if the students are already aware of the basics of one before starting another.
Non-negotionables in your classroom.
These are set points that you as the educator will not allow any change in your room. These are the things that the students will have no other choice but to do and follow. These are set rules that can be made for the students when they are using their tools. Safety for the students is the top priority.
efficacy and efficiency
These tools need to be tools that can help the teacher and the student become efficient. These tools will help better them in their academics in the classroom and out. This will benefit them later on in their adult lives.
