Demand for services is High
Australia
According to a survey done by the Australian Psychology Society (APS) in February, 1 in 3 psychologists are unable to see new clients.
Currently, 73.5% of psychologists in metropolitan areas have a waiting list1. Of those able to accept more patients, 64% of respondents say wait times are getting worse.
Clients are often waiting up to 3 months to see a psychologist, and some are waiting more than 6 months1. In Queensland, some patients are being forced to wait up to nine months to secure an appointment with a psychologist or psychiatrist.
The situation is being worsened further by rising living costs in 2022, which is pushing more and more people to seek the limited amount of bulk-billed psychology services on offer3.
USA
According to a survey by the American Psychological Association, as the impact of the pandemic on mental health continues, psychologists are reporting a large increase in demand for treatment of anxiety and depression compared with last year
Many psychologists also said they had increased workloads and longer waitlists than before the pandemic1. Almost 7 in 10 psychologists (68%) with a waitlist reported that it had grown longer since the start of the pandemic.
With these indicators suggesting many psychologists are working at or beyond capacity, more than 4 in 10 (41%) reported being unable to meet the demand for treatment (up from 30% last year), and 46% said they felt burned out (up from 41% last year).
The National Council of Mental Wellbeing reports the average wait time to access behavioral health services is about six weeks. But if you’re looking for a specialist in a certain area or with specific attributes, wait times can stretch into months.
When will this be utilised? eg. distress, what level of distress?
post initial consultation and follow up of patient progress through self assessments between in person sessions
could be used as a stop gap for long wait times pre initial consultation to delivers more general items such as walking goals and education on how to manage anxiety and stress
