I BELIEVE
All students should have access to Arts Education
It is the teacher's responsibility to meet students where they are and to provide needed accommodations
Students have a right to feel safe in the classroom
Family/Teacher relationships are equally as important as student/teacher relationships
In respecting me students in the same way I expect them to respect me
Students should have input in their learning
Content should be fluid to respond to current events/movements
Tailor repertoire choices to the group
Advanced/standard parts available, as needed
Rewrite parts
Learn strengths of students to better tailor instruction
singing/demonstration
saying note names/fingerings
I encourage mistakes
Flexibility on submission format for assignments
Regular communication on what is going on, particularly what is going right
Address messages to "orchestra families" rather than "orchestra parents"
Handwritten thank you notes to chaperones/volunteers
Careful consideration of language choices
Apologize for mistakes
Refer to them as "students" rather than "children"
Discussion on popular pieces with problematic histories (ex. Jingle Bells)
Composition project to address composer diversity
Opportunities to select concert music
Opportunity to share pieces of music they like
Advocating for full time orchestra position to expand access to EL students
Being flexible in my schedule to access students who need smaller settings
Recruit for all aspects of the arts, not just orchestra
