Module 4
Fibre-optic cabling: fragile, used for connecting data centers, used over longer distances
single mode fibre: small core, expensive lasers, long range
multi mode fibre: larger core, inepensive LEDs, shorter range, LED transmits different angles
Used in industries -> enterprise networks, fibre-to-the-home (FTTH), long-haul networks, submarine cables
-
Physical Layer
Purpose: wired/wireless physical connection needs to be made before communication (usually for coporate office/home)
-
-
Wireless media: carries electromagnetic signals containing binary digits using signals pass thru air
Limitations: coverage area, security, interference, shared medium
Standards -> WI-FI, bluetooth, WiMAX, Zigbee
WLAN needs -> Wireless access point (AP), Wireless NIC adapters
Copper cabling: common cable type - cheap, easy to install, low resistance
-
Types
STP -> provide more noise protection than UTP but expensive, hard installation, foil shield for EMI/RFI protection
Coxial -> woven copper wire, second wire shields for inner conductor, layer flexible plastic, used for wireless & cable internet installations
UTP -> rj45, outer jacket protects copper wires from physical damage, interference protection
