Tsarist system
Was supported by several features called “Pillars of Autocracy”.
They had a divine to rule Russia
Their position and power had been given to them by God.
The Tsar was the head of the Orthodox Church. The Church reinforced his authority.
The nobility accounted for approximately 10 percent of the population..
This upper class owned all the land and was dependent on the Tsar.
They also dominated the army command and civil service.
Designed to support autocracy and Tsarist authority.
Intended to suppress opposition and increase fear among the population.
They had a large army that became a very effective means of enforcing his power.
BACK-GROUND TO RUSSIAN EMPIRE
In the late 1800s
Russia was the largest country in the world
It had a population of approximately 100 million
Half of these were ethnic Russians
There was little industry and the vast majority of the population were peasant farmers.
Many still existed as serfs
Most of the population were illiterate
Russian Empire was politically, economically and socially backwards
They worked in an agricultural system
