Network Concepts
Connected by → Wired medium such as cables, or by a wireless medium such as Wi-Fi.
Two or more computers or other electronic devices connected together.
The largest network is the internet itself.
Network Interface Card (NIC)
Needed to allow a device to connect a network
Each NIC is given a unique hardwired media access control address at the manufacturing stage.
Media Access Control (MAC)
Number which uniquely identifies a device when is connected to a network.
They never change and that make it more reliable.
Internet Protocol (IP)
Define the rules that must be agreed by senders and recivers of data communicating through the internet
Identifies the location of a device on a network
There are two versions: IPv4 and IPv6
Data Packets
Data is moved around networks in the form of data packet.
User sends data and it split up into a number of packets each one is separately transmitted.
Network devices /Networking Hardware
Switches
Connect devices together to form LAN
Stores the MAC addres of all devices on the network
Matches the MAC address and directs it to the correct device
More secure than hubs
, because only the intended device is sent the data
Used to exchange data within their own local area networks
Unable to exchange data with outside networks.
Use data packets
Hubs
Hardware devices that can have a number of other devices connected to them.
Connect devices together to form a local areal network(LAN)
Take data packet received at one of its ports and broadcast to the others devices connected to it.
Routers
Route data packets from one network to another.
Used to join a LAN to the internet.
Scan a device`s IP address.
Connected networks will use different communication rules.
More than two ports.
Routing table direct data packets to the correct device.
Bridges
Can´t communicate with other external networks.
Connect LAN to another LAN that uses the same communication rules.
Scan device´s MAC address
Data is sent out using data oackets
Only two ports
Network Types
Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)
wireless switch or router
used for sending and receiving data to the computers
Local Area Network (LAN)
private network belonging to an organisation or business
network that extends over a large area
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Consist of end systems and intermediate systems.
Make use of some public communications network
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth - Cloud computing
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Offer wireles communication between devices
Use electromagnetic radiation as the carrier of data transmission
Bluetooth
Sends and recives radio waves in a band of 79 different frequencies (channels)
Devices that usea this detect and connect to each other, but they don´t interfere with other devices
When it is paired the devices constantly change the channels they are using, to minimise the risks of interference with other devices
Uses key encryption to create a
WPAN
Useful
Transferring data between two or more devices wich are very close together (less than 30 meters)
The speed of data transmission is not critical
For low-bandwidth applications
Wi-Fi
Sends and recives radio waves in several different frequency bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz )
It offers much faster data transfer rates, better range and security than Bluetooth
Cloud Computing
Method of data storage where data is stored on remote servers.
Public cloud:
The client cloud storage provider are different companies
Private cloud:
Storage provider integrated and operated as a single entity.
Hybrid cloud
: Data resides in the private cloud and the other less-sensitive data from a public cloud.
Save data
"In the cloud"
Network issues- Communication
Authentication methods
Zero login and Biometrics
Builds up a complex user profile based on the above two features.
Fingerprint recognition system recognizes the user and unlocks the phone.
Magnetic stripes
The stripe is read by swiping it through a card reader.
Can also use holographic image(hologram)
Smart cards
The card act as a smart contactless card.
The chip of the card can store data such as number, sex, etc.
Physical tokens
Form of authentication in the form as a physical, solid object.
Passwords
Passwords are used in many instances when accessing the internet.
Electronic tokens
Software installed on a user`s device, such as a smartphone.
Anti-malware software
Anti-virus software that protect devices against a potential virus attack.
Electronic Conferencing
Video
conferencing
Communication method that uses both video and sound
Basic hardware includes: Web cams, Large monitors/television screens, microphones, and speakers
Advantages
Easier to access important documents
Possible to hold conferences at short notice
Not traveling physically to meetings reduces costs
Better to use than have delegates travel to potentially unsafe places around the world
Better for the enviroment
Audio
conferecing
The organiser of the phone conference is given two PINs by the phone company. One is personal and the other one is the participant´s
Contacts all of the participants and informs them of their PIN, date and time
The participants then call the same conference number to join in
Web
conferencing
Uses internet to permit a conference to take place.
Meetings , conferences or presentations, etc.
