Prerequisites
Normal regulation: if PT is prolonged .. vit. k is given IV for a few days to correct hypoprothrombinemia before the procedure

Indications
Diagnosis of proximal (high) disorders of biliary tree that couldn't be visualized by a ERCP or field ERCP ex.

Therapeutic: as percutaneous insertion of stents or catheters to drain bile, in this case the procedure is called PTD
