Different Types of Assessments
Formative assessment
What it is: Assessment for learning, used by the teacher during a lesson to have an idea of how well the students are learning in that specific class
Why it is used: It lets the teacher know what step to take next during the lesson
Example: A teacher finishes going over a math exercise and asks if there are any questions or if any student did not understand. He would then ask any student to elaborate on which part they need help on, and then go over that part again
Summative assessment
What it is: Assessment of learning, usually in the form of an end-of-unit quiz, semester exam, or standardized test
Example: End of year exams
Why it is used: It helps evaluate student learning and their academic achievement, and how they compare to other students. With enough students, it also helps evaluate how well the teacher taught a specific class
Assessment as learning
Why it is used: To be able to perform an assessment, students must have a good grasp of its content. It forces the student to organize their thoughts and learn from mistakes (their or someone else’s) and can also be used as an incentive to learning when they assess the progress they’ve made
Example: Students going over their own or another classmate’s exercises or quizzes
What it is: When students assess themselves or each other, as part of the learning process
Diagnostic assessment
Why it is used: It tells teachers what knowledge of the subject each student has before starting the lesson. If the teacher finds that most of the class already have a good grasp of the topic, he can do a shorter introduction and move on to deeper content. Conversely, if the topic is completely new to most students, it may be worth spending time going over it in more detail
Example: Classroom discussion to start the lesson
What it is: Also called pre-assessment, it is a type of formative assessment or assessment for learning, made before teaching
Performance assessment:
Why it is used: It helps evaluate student learning and their academic achievement, and how they compare to other students. With enough students, it also helps evaluate how well the teacher taught a specific class
Example: Standardized exams
What it is: A summative assessment or assessment of learning, usually in the form of an end-of-unit quiz, semester exam, or standardized test
