Method - LaPierre travelled around America with a Chinese couple, expecting to meet discrimination from the anti-Chinese feeling at a time of widespread discrimination
Visiting 67 hotels and 184 restaurants. 6 months later they send a letter asking if they would accept Chinese guests.
Results - only one place refused entry, 92% wont accept, 1% will accept, 7% said that it depends
Conclusion - Attitudes don’t predict behaviour. Cognition and attitudes aren't expressed in behaviour.
Limitations - Wasn’t scientific, maybe change in hands since service, accompanied by white guy.

Cognitive Dissonance
COGNITIVE DISSONANCE: the feeling of discomfort due to the conflict between 2 conflicting beliefs; conflicting actions & beliefs.
People have the desire to have consistency in their thoughts, perceptions & image of themselves - they change their thoughts/attitudes to match their actions.
Cognitions: knowledge, opinions, beliefs (relating to self, behaviour, environment).
Dissonance: a state of psychological tension which motivates people to do something to get rid of it to have a state of equilibrium.
