Why to use?
Corpora can be a rich source of authentic material
Corpora can provide students with many examples of the target feature in a concentrated manner
it helps students better understand the feature and its contexts and cotexts of use
Corpora can be a tool for checking the appropriacy of ss language
What is a corpora?
A collection of naturally occurring texts that is usually stored on a computer or in the Net
Types of a corpora
Academic\media\fiction
Spoken\written
regional types (BNC, COCA)
HOW to use?
Using teacher-prepared corpus material (teachers show prepared concordance lines for ss)
Teachers can control the material (especially good at low levels)
How to adapt?
Delete lines that contain difficult discipline-specific vocabulary
Focus on meaningful input that contains few or no distracting input.
Prepared lines can be used as an ideal way of introducing students to concordance lines
Using online corpora
Analyzing frequency in different discourses
Look at typical syntactical features
see specific compositional features of a text and analyze only a certain part of it (how citations are used; how graph info is analyzed)
see whether chosen word is used in a certain type of discourse
Creating corpora for classroom use
