His writings were responsible for fractionalizing the Catholic Church and sparking the Protestant Reformation, as he criticized the sale of indulgences and called for reform within the Catholic Church. Teachings emphasized justification by faith alone and the authority of scripture. Luther's actions sparked a widespread movement that led to the formation of Lutheran churches.
      - Calvin - John Calvin, a French theologian whose teachings, particularly in "Institutes of the Christian Religion," emphasized the sovereignty of God and the importance of disciplined Christian living. Ideas influenced the development of reformed churches. Stressed the doctrine of predestination, and his interpretations of Christian teachings, known as Calvinism, are characteristic of Reformed churches.
