Assessments
Summative
Definition: evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value.
Example 1: SATs, The SAT is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States.
Example 2: Midterms. A mid-term exam is a test that students take halfway through the term. They are a formative assessment that helps teachers and parents measure students' understanding of the course material for the period they have been in school.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are intended to help teachers identify what students know and can do in different domains to support their students' learning. These kinds of assessments may help teachers determine what students understand in order to build on the students' strengths and address their specific needs.
Example 2: Graffiti Walls- A graffiti wall is a temporary canvas where people can write and sketch responses to a specific prompt or question as they pass through a shared location.
Example 1: Gap Closing-Gap Closing resources are designed for students who need additional support in mathematics.
Formative
Definition: Students are given feedback via formative assessments and/or assignments by teachers to guide their learning. This allows students to work through problems independently and get immediate feedback from the teacher. It also encourages collaborative learning, as students can discuss their solutions with one another and learn from each other.
Example 1: "My favorite no" Prepare a few warm-up problems for students. Students should be given index cards and then sort them into yes/no piles. Together, choose one of your favorite no responses and analyze it as a class.
Example 2: "Mini-whiteboards" Students, or groups of students, have mini-whiteboards. The students can share their solutions with you as a class, or you can walk around the room and see what they have done.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition:During the school year, interim assessments are administered to check students' knowledge and guide future instruction. In the course of the school year, these assessments occur between formative and summative assessments.
Example 1: A diagnostic assessment is the use of multiple measures and reports to identify student strengths and needs in specific skill areas. With this information, teachers can provide instruction to properly address learning needs.
Example 2: "DCP's" or district checkpoints Are learning checkpoints designed to help students apply key concepts and skills to various texts, images, data sets, and contexts. They are used to help teachers understand each student's strengths and weaknesses and develop personalized instruction. Interim assessments also help teachers measure student growth over time.
Performance
Definition: An approach to educational assessment that requires students to directly demonstrate what they know and are able to do through open-ended tasks such as constructing an answer, producing a project, or performing an activity.
Example 1: Leapfrog fractions-As students add fractions with unlike denominators, they must be familiar with and understand how to represent numbers and fractions, as well as their knowledge of benchmarks and equivalent fraction forms. It is imperative that students combine fractions by applying their knowledge of one whole.
Example 2: Fair play-Area and perimeter will be measured and students need to understand the differences between them. When perimeter stays the same, while area changes, perimeter changes when area changes, and vice versa.
