Different Types of Assessments
Summative assessment
What the assessment is:
To evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
Why it is used:
They can help illuminate areas of strength and gaps in curriculum and instruction, and especially for student subgroups. Reporting summative results provides information to families.
An example of the type of assessment is
a mid module but also a final paper.
Different types of formative assessments are
Exam papers, Term papers, Portfolios and Student's evaluation.
Assessment of learning
Why it's used:
This assessment is usually used at the end of every quarter or semester to examine what the student's grade will be. This assessment is also used to gather data on the student learning outcomes in a class at the end of a semester. These assessments are also given to determine future learning lessons for students and to provide feedback in PLCS.

What it is:
Assessment of learning helps teachers understand and assess students learning based on evidence. This is also called a Summative Assessment.

Diagnostic assessments

why it's used:
to identify the students' current knowledge base, which activities students are already proficient at, which activities students need support with, etc.
examples:
class discussions, graphic visualizations (flow charts, mind/concept maps, KWL, etc.), interviews, journal entries, one minute essay, poll, quick quizzes, reflections

Assessment for learning
Why it's used:
This assessment informs the teacher of the student's understanding of a certain topic or lesson that was taught in class. This helps a teacher reflect if the students understood what the teacher taught. It also provides positive feedback to the student to help them reflect if they need improvement.

What it is:
It's an assessment given to students to help the teacher analyze what the student understands throughout the teaching and learning process of a certain topic. Also known as formative assessment.

Formative assessment
What the assessment is:
A formative assessment is used to to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning.
Why it is used:
Formative assessments encourage teachers to clarify their goals and objectives for each and every lesson. Engaging in a dialogue at the start of a lesson allows teachers to state what they need students to learn.
An example of the type of assessment is
a test; like an end of module.

Observations, Homework, Reflection Journals, In class activities and Student Feedback.

why it's used:
track student progress over time to measure personal growth
examples:
compare pre-test results with final exam results, chart weekly assessments, determine personal best, etc.

Assessment as learning
Why it's used:
This assessment is used to allow students to have responsibility for their learning. It allows students to grow and develop their understanding through learning in their way. It also allows them to have their own formal/informal feedback of assessment to help them develop their learning.
What It Is:
Students have the ability to control and be responsible of their own learning. Gives the students the ability to have their own strategies and skills of learning individually.
