Types of Assessments
(Jilana) Assessment of learning.
Assessment of learning helps teachers identify evidence of student learning and use this to record achievement based on outcomes and standards. This is also known as ‘summative assessment’, and it is done at key points during the school year such as at the end of a unit, term or semester. Students are typically given a rank or grade after an assessment of learning. This assessment is only as effective as the quality of the feedback that is provided to students as it will determine if students can learn and grow based on the results of the assessment.

Diagnostic Assessments (Hien)
Diagnostic assessments are pretests at the beginning of the course, a unit/topic or lesson. Also known as pre-assessments provide teachers with information about student's prior knowledge and misconceptions before beginning a learning activity and also diagnose students’ strengths and areas of need. Diagnostic tests help to tell the teacher and the student how much they know and don’t know about an upcoming topic. This helps to inform the teacher’s lesson planning, learning objectives, and identify areas that may need more or less time spent on.
Another valuable use of a diagnostic pre-test is to give the students an idea of what they will have learned by end of the learning period. When combined with a post test, their score on a pre-test will show students just how much knowledge they have gained. This can be a powerful practice for building esteem in students
