Formative
Defintion: This is a way to assess students knowledge and determine if instruction needs to be adjusted or retaught to reach students needs.
Example 1: A class discussion. Students will hold a class discussion on what they learned that day allowing the teacher to see if there is any confusion that she may need to reteach or allow her to know if she can move on.
Example 2: An exit ticket. Students will fill out a quick 2-3 question exit ticket when they leave the classroom for a transition.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: This assessment is a way to test students if they are on track with their learning for the year as well as if they will be successful on future end of year assessments.

Example 2: STAAR test. Texas' standerized test to assess students knowledge from what they learned in their grade level that year.

Diagnostic
Definition: an assessment that can identify what the students already know about the topic as well as see if the students hold any misconceptions in the material. This allows for the teachers to alter their lessons to meet the needs of students.
Example 1: A prequiz. A quiz given to students who haven't been taught the material yet to see what they may or may not know prior to the unit or lesson.
Example 2: KWL chart. Students write what they know about the topic if any as well as what they want to know. This shows if the students hold any prior knowledge to the topic or unit.
