Summative Assessment
What is it? Summative assessments seek to "sum up" student learning, and typically take place at the end of a unit. They are typically more formal and higher stakes than formative assessments.
Multiple Choice Objective Test: This is a multiple choice text given at the end of a unit or school year to measure student mastery of learning objectives for the unit or time period.
Project: This is an assessment where students typically make and present some form of product that requires the student to understand and demonstrate mastery of their learning following a unit.
Performance Assessment
What is it? Performance assessment is a way of assessing students by having them actually "do" something, or perform a specific task rather than answering questions about it. Performance can typically be scored by a rubric, and can be helpful for students who may struggle with written forms of exams.
Conducting a Lab: In a science class where students are learning about the scientific method, students will either design or perform a lab in which they actively perform the steps of the scientific method to demonstrate knowledge.
Research Essay Writing: Students will actively perform the learned research process and form a cohesive research paper to demonstrate their learning.
Diagnostic Assessment
What is it? Diagnostic assessment is an evaluation form that takes place prior to teaching to determine student performance strengths and weaknesses. Diagnostic assessment seeks to determine the cause behind student performance. This information can be used to guide instruction or remediation.
Teacher-Led Discussion: Discussions over a topic to be learned led by the teacher to determine what kind of information students know or do not know about a topic. Anecdotal notes can be taken by the teacher.
KWL Chart: Students and teacher work to fill out a list of known information and questions before beginning instruction, and after what was learned after instruction. The known information and questions are good insight to what students do and do not know.
Formative Assessment
What is it? Formative assessment is assessment "for" learning. It involves collecting evidence of student learning during the process and allows for effective feedback to be given. Data gathered can be used to adjust instruction according to student need.
Exit Ticket: Exit tickets can take multiple forms but are typically given the last few minutes of a day's learning before students move on. They can consist of answering a question, writing information learned, or writing down questions they may have themselves.
Running Records: Running records are a way of assessing reading level, and should be given periodically throughout learning to measure improvement and adjust instruction accordingly to student's level and comprehension.
