Assessments
Formative
Defintion: Formative Assessment is a way to receive feedback on a student's mastery of a topic in order to modify or adjust instruction. This assessment is not for a grade but more for the Teacher to help assist the students.
Examples:
- In-Class Discussions- in the beginning and during the lesson. The teacher begins discussion to see what the students know and during the lesson the teacher will call on students to see what they have learned. * Can call non-volunteers.
- Exit Tickets- Students will be asked to write one thing they have learned from this lesson and/or can be given a question related to the lesson so the teacher can see where he/she should adjust instruction from.
Interim/Benchmarks
Defintion: Interim or Benchmark Assessments are assessments given to students throughout the school year to monitor growth based on their learning and academic goals.
Examples:
- STAAR - Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness is a state standardized test given to students to measure students' academic knowledge of their grade level.
- MAP Test- A computerized Assessment given to students three times throughout the school year. Beginning, Middle and End of Year.
Summative
Definition: Summative Assessments are tests given to students to evaluate their learning at the end of an instructional unit.
Examples:
- Final Project: Helps students summarize what they have learned at the of a long period of time. through a creative point of view.
- Mid-Term Exam: Way to assess students through an exam to see a students overall knowledge at the end of a unit.
Diagonostic
Defintion: Diagnostic Assessments are to assess a students current knowledge or views on a topic/lesson that will be given in the classroom. A form of Pre-Assessment.
Examples:
- KWL Chart: Teacher holds a discussion before and after the lesson to see what students Know about a topic, What they want to know and afterwards what they have Learned.
- Student Surveys: This is given to students at the beginning of a lesson or even the day before so the Teacher has a viewpoint of how the students can connect their knowledge to the new topic about to be taught.
Performance
Defintion: Assessment that requires students to demonstrate their knowledge and strategies by creating or doing a task.
Examples:
- Presentations: A very comment way for students to provide information, teach a skill, talk about the progress and also persuade others to follow their footsteps.
- Science Fair/Projects: Include students presenting or sharing information based on something they have learning in the their Science Unit.
