Noir film, Detectives and mystery - investigations of crime scenes will be…
Noir film
Genre
-
Femme fatale - Use of a woman who uses her sexuality and power over an insecure man to recruit him to the crime family and do crimes in their favour
Crime - Noir films always have a empahsis on crime through different ways and with my idea it would be a central pillar of the narrative.
Ideas
Idea 1
Two rival detectives in New York are working against each other to catch a killer who has been killing other detectives and police officers. Both aim to catch him first for the fame and notoriety they could earn from succeeding. They both go to extremes to be quick to the case to be the one who catches the killer. In the third act one of the detectives visits the other and they sit discussing the killer until the other detective reveals himself to be the killer. They hold each other at gunpoint and in the end they both shoot each other ending the film.
Idea 2
A man whose wife goes missing must hire a detective to find out where she has been taken following clues and secret letters that have been addressed to him by his wife to find out where she is. Ultimately the detective calls off the case and the man decides to complete it himself stealing the clues and evidence from the police station and putting together the clues and finding his wives location. He goes there only to find he is in the basement of the detective he hired. He confronts him and after fighting, shoots him in the chest.
Idea 3 (Chosen Idea)
A man tries to join a New York gangster crime family and must kill a investigating detective to join. The detective is his brother and he must grapple with the idea of killing his brother but gaining power and money in return. He kills his brother and must hide his secret from his family whilst now having power and stake in a crime family.
Style
Black and white
Chiaroscuro lighting - heavy shadows to hide the characters in the scenes and make them more mysterious
It will look gritty and dark trying to depict a cold city full of crime and violence which will be visible through the mise-en-scene I aim to use.
Feedback
Feedback for the narrative and the story could be received through a focus group that gains different peoples opinions and thoughts of the story.
Another method could be sending away pre-production documents like a script and a mind map to gain people's thoughts and opinions on the concept as well.
Research
The postman always rings twice - The main character is controlled by lust and love by a femme fatale who desires control over him like a puppet
Blade runner - The detective can't trust anyone at anytime and is constantly surrounded by people who could be dangerous which is a theme I would be interested in exploring to make the character seem out of place and stranded.
Brief
The narrative follows lots of conventions and common tropes of the genres with an emphasis on detectives, gangsters, crime and betrayals. This makes it a noir through how the plot unfolds and how it replicates and mirrors traditional noir films from the era.
Lighting and mise-en-scene will make the setting, world and characters feel gritty and cold and as if they are stuck in a crime filled city that no one really wants to be in
-
Detectives and mystery - investigations of crime scenes will be a concurrent theme across all the ideas
