Plots that audience would be able to relate to, or could happen in real life.
No fantasia elements impact story, all issues are derived from people and their issues.
Characters do not break the fourth wall or interact with the audience in any shape or form.
Scenarios are harsh
Have been "criticised for being too blunt"
Must be in order to seek change or pursue given message.
Characters in naturalistic stories are influenced by others around them, family issues.
Characters and other aspects of this style are usually symbolic, or have meaning below the surface.
"Characters must follow natural laws, of reality"
Set may not change, located in the same place for entirety.
For modern plays, costume and set would be modern.
Older century plays or films would require period mis en scene.
Film or play may only take place over a one hour period in character's lives, rather than over a week long period.
Often, scenarios are harsh, (sexuality, oppression, suicide, poverty etc.)
"Victims of their own circumstance"
Usually of working or middle class.
