Water Cycle - Coggle Diagram
Water Cycle
What is the water cycle?
The continuous movement of water
Heat energy from the Sun causes water vapour on Earth to evaporate
Water evaporates from the ground and water bodies
Living things also release water vapour into the air
Water vapour cools as it rises to the sky
Cooled water vapour condenses into tiny water droplets, forming clouds
When water droplets become too big and heavy, they fall from clouds
as
Rain
Snow
Hail
Rain falls onto Earth as fresh water
Clouds
Provides us with
Snow
Hail
Rain
Reduces the Sun's direct rays on Earth
Snow
Made up of snowflakes
When air temperature drops below freezing point
Water droplets in clouds freeze into ice crystals
Hail
Frozen rain or hailstones
Water droplets freeze when they are carried to the top of the clouds
Frost
Water vapour in the air freezes into tiny crystals
When the temperature of the ground is below freezing point...
The air above the ground becomes very cold

Why is the Water Cycle important?
Living things need water to stay alive
The only natural way to ensure a constant supply of fresh water for living things on Earth
Evaporation separates water from dirt and salt
Rain purifies the air by removing impurities
The Need For Water In Humans
In the digestive system, water is needed to digest food
In the respiratory system, water is needed for gaseous exchange
Makes up 75% of the human body
In the circulatory system, water is needed in the blood
The Need For Water In Plants
For germination, a seed needs sufficient water
During photosynthesis, plants need water to make food (sugar)
In the plant transport system, water helps in the movement of substances
Why is water a precious resource?
Sources of Water
Fresh water exists in solid state as icebergs and glaciers, while in the liquid state is groundwater
Exists as water vapour, ice and snow
Only 1% of water on earth is suitable for consumption
Sources of fresh water
Ponds
Rivers
Lakes
A limited resource
Uses of Water
Uses of Water (Liquid)
For drinking
For washing and bathing
For cooling of machines
For extinguishing fires
For sports
Uses of Steam or Water Vapour (Gas)
For driving an engine
For generating electricity
For cooking (steaming)
Uses of Ice (Solid)
For keeping food (meat and fish) fresh
Bringing the body temperature down from a fever
Pollution of Water
Harmful substances are released into the water
Unsightly and give off foul-smelling gases
Can harm or kill plants and animals
Less usable water
Needs to be treated before use
Common causes
Littering
Dumping of Waste
Oil Spills
Deforestation

How can we conserve water?
3Rs
Reuse
Use rainwater to wash floors
Use water used to wash rice and vegetables to water the plants
Use water from washing machines to wash toilets
Recycle
Treat waste water to make it usable
Reduce
Take a shower instead of a bath
Collect water in a wash basin and wash your plates in it
Instead of using a running tap
Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth
Turn off the tap while lathering your hair with shampoo
Promote using campaigns, posters and water rationing exercises
