THE DEVELOPMENT OF BIBLE CRITICISM - Coggle Diagram
THE DEVELOPMENT OF BIBLE CRITICISM
BACKGROUND
During 19th cent, there were developments in what is termed as 'liberal theology'
this was an attempt to show he relevance of religious ideas to modern life
it also sought to rationalise and present the christian faith in a way that was compatible with science and with modern thought generally
Liberal theologians argued the bibles should be studies like any other collection of ancient documents
they studies the bible using:
higher criticism (examining how different passages and books were written and how they relate with one another
lower criticism (examining the detain in the content, language and meaning of passages to identify precise meanings)
KEY FEATURES OF BIBLICAL CRITICISM
Biblical criticism examines the original languages in which scripture was written
this makes surety translated words reflect the meaning that authors intended
It looks at the form of each piece of writing/ literacy genres in order to find the context in which it should be understood
e.g letter(1 Corinthians)
-liturgical material (phillipians 2)
it examines the background of each passage of scripture
including commonly held views of the day (cultural views)
things the writer assumed his readers would know and therefore did not need to explain
CHALLANGES TO BIBLICAL CRITICISM
although biblical criticism was widely accepted as a legitimate tool for theologians, there were those who felt that treating the bible as ordinary text that could be analysed, was wrong
BARTH
Rejected the liberal approach
he argued that the christian message in the bible is not a development of enlightenment values
its role was to challenge ordinary human assumptions
the bible should be allowed to challenge secular views rather than having interpretation driven by them
he said the bible passes judgement on human reason, not the other way around
this is the basis of the way many conservative evangelical christians interpret the bible
FUNDAMENTALISM
Reject anything but a literalist interpretation of the bible
they believe that the bible is the infallible word of god so the role and status of women in the church is not a matter of debate
