The Play is set in 1912 - two years before WW1. Mr Birling says the war will not happen but everyone watching knows it definitely will.

In 1912, the world was VERY capitalist. Socialist states did not exist, pretty much everything was privatised and economic inequality was horrendously high.
Women were considered to be objects used for decoration and making babies. They did NOT have the vote (no suffrage) and were often looked down upon.
Trade Unions were NOT legal back then - you could be sacked for being part of a trade union (like Eva Smith was.)
