Does Flipped Learning Work? A New Analysis Dives Into the Research.
The current implementation of Flipped Learning is not successful.
Students are not actively learning, but more passively letting the teacher fill in the knowledge for them.
Many students do not prepare for class by completing video lectures or assignments, not allowing for productive classroom activities.
Many different versions and variations of Flipped Learning throughout K-12 and higher education.
Because of this, there is a lack of consistency with Flipped Learning validity.
Flipped Learning does not look the same throughout K-12 and higher education.
Researchers argue the meta-analysis completed was comparing different types of education.
Flipped Learning is still a work in progress, and many teachers are working out the "uneven implementation" that was conducted from the research.
My opinion on the article
Overall, I agree with the article. I think Flipped Learning is not as accessible or engaging as we had hoped for it to be.
I do appreciate that educators of all areas of education are attempting the Flipped Learning model, examining the pros and cons, and determining the most successful aspects to continue implementing.
Personally, I don't know if there is enough evidence to support Flipped Learning for elementary students for me to try it in my own classroom.
For me to incorporate Flipped Learning into my classroom, I would want to see more examples of this learning in elementary classrooms and more structures that would support students in and out of the classroom.
To have a successful Flipped Learning, potentially incorporate a "fail, flip, fix and feed" format.
At home, students are asked to solve/complete a problem they don't yet have the skills for.
Students utilize the "flip" learning feature to watch videos and complete assignments to support them in completing the problem.
In the classroom, teachers will work with students to "fix" any misconceptions or wrong information gathered.
Finally, teachers provide "feedback" after assessing student knowledge.
Researchers used detailed analysis of dozens of studies to determine a variation of Flipped Learning that provides success and accountable to all students.
