CLASS
- The poorest groups are more likely to be victimised
- e.g crime rates highest in areas of high unemployment and deprivation
- a survey of 300 homeless peoples showed they were 12 times more likely to have experienced violence than the general population
AGE
- Younger people more at risk of victimisation
- those most at risk of being murdered are infants under 1
- teenagers more vulnerable to offences such as assault, sexual harassment,theft, abuse
- the old are at risk abuse e.g in care homes where victimisation is less visible
ETHNICITY
- MEGs at higher risk of victimisation than white poeple in general as well as racially motivated crimes
- more likely to report feeling under protected yet over controlled
GENDER
- Males at greater risk od becoming victims to violent attacks especially by strangers
- 70% homicide victims= men

IMPACT OF VICTIMISATION
- Crimes can have serious physical and mental impacts
- e.g research has found a variety of effects (depending on crime), including disturbed sleep, helplessness, difficulties in social functioning
- crimes may also 'indirect' victims such as friends relatives and witnesses to the crime
- PYNOOS found that child witnesses of a sniper attack has grief related dreams a year after the event
- similarly hate crimes against minorities create waves of harm hat radiate out to affect others
- these are 'message' crimes aimed at intimidating whole communities
- secondary victimisation: Idea hat in addition to the impact of crime itself, individuals may suffer further victimisation at the hands of the CJS
