Turfgrass management lesson 2
ROUTINE PRACTICES
Irrigating
Water used to balance the Evapotranspiration rate
Goal should be to use as little as necessary
Warm season grasses are much more efficient in holding in water
Greens require more irrigation because of short mowing heights
Syringing - cooling off grass
Wetting agent - increases penetration properties of water
Mowing
Short mow heights can stress the grass
Can reduce ability to make food
Reduce ability to absorb water
Reduce ability to tolerate disease
no more than 1/3 of the grass should be removed
Frequent mowing is better
Proper mowing prevents scalp
Mowing in same direction produces grain
Greens are cut in a scissor like fashion
Plant Growth Regulators
Fertilizing
Goal should be apply smallest amount possible
Nitrogen
Greener
Growth
Most important
Phosphorus
Disease resistance
weather tolerance
Least important
Potassium
increases metabolism
helps with weather stresses
Most fertilizers are synthetic
Traffic management
Tee markers
Hole locations
Path restrictions
Rolling of greens
Faster
Smoother
uniform
Can lead to thinning of turf density
PERIODIC PRACTICES
Aerating
Losens the soil
prevent compaction
Core aeration (3-5'' plugs)
Clay and high traffic areas need more aeration
Aeration is done when the grass grows more vigorously
Topdressing
adding a layer of sand
Smooths the green
Dethatching
Thatch is a layer of decomposing organic material
some thatch is good for weather and good microorganisms
verticutting removes thatch
Aeration breaks up thatch
Overseeding
Planting cool season grasses over warm season
cool season die out when it warms up
PEST CONTROL
interferes with the ability to keep course in good shape
Weeds
plant out of place
Poa annua is usually a pain
Healthy turf prevents weed growth
Herbicides used to kill plants
Postmergence (direct application)
Premergence
Disease
Pathogens
environmental stress
Fungi
Most issues arie from fungi
Some are beneficial
Pythium blight is the worst
Insects
Chewing (leaves)
Sucking (nutrients)
Indirect damage from animals
Treat outbreaks as they occur
Keep thatch at a minimum
Control weeds
Vertebrate animals
SAND BUNKERS
2nd most labor intensive
Bunkers generate most complaints after greens.
Replaced periodically
Some point renovated completely
