Module 2
Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic
Prokaryotic
Ribosomes are smaller, described as 70s.
Comprises unicellular organisms: Archaea or Bacteria.
DNA is free in cytoplasm as plasmid loops, comprised of one chromosome, no nucleus.
Cell wall made of peptidoglycan.
Size between 0.1 - 10 um.
Eukaryotic
Ribosomes are larger, described as 80s
Comprises multicellular organisms: Plant, fungi, animal.
DNA exists in the nucleolus as multiple chromosomes.
Plant cell wall made of cellulose, fungi cell wall made of chitin.
Size between 10 - 100 um.
Organelles:
Animal
Mitochondria
Ribosomes
Golgi apparatus
Cell membrane
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Cytoskeleton
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Nucleus
Protein synthesis
1: DNA within the nucleolus transcribed into messenger RNA (mRNA.)
2: mRNA exits nucleolus and nucleus into RER, where it is translated and proteins are synthesised by ribosomes attached to RER
3: Pass into cisternae of the RER and are packaged into transport vesicles.
